Back to the Books!

Amber Randhawa What's Happening Around Atlanta

Students across Atlanta will be heading back to class soon, and in honor of this “back to the books” time of year, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite local bookstores across Atlanta.  Sure, we all love the convenience of our Kindles, and we are admittedly spoiled to being able to order a book from Amazon and have it in hand a mere 24 hours later. But still….there’s just something magical about a real book, and an old fashioned bookstore, filled to the roof with stacks and shelves of beloved titles (and maybe a cat or two). Read on, and go visit one of these great stores!

A Cappella Books

A Cappella Books has been serving Atlanta for 30 years now, growing from its original Little Five Points location to its current cozy storefront in Inman Park. A haven for those seeking rare and antiquarian titles, A Cappella is also a favorite source of new releases and used favorites. The store also plays host to frequent book signings and literary events. Numerous book clubs meet at nearby locations but organize via A Cappella, and a membership club is available to give loyal customers discounts and priority seating at events.

Atlanta Vintage Books

Atlanta Vintage Books is the place to go to find rare, collectable and unique editions of nearly any book you desire, making it the perfect place to find a special gift for your favorite bibliophile. The current owners purchased the already 25 year old store in 2007, and have continued to find a loyal following among local readers. The store also has a collection of historic and vintage newspapers and magazines, and a few feline friends who keep customers company as they browse.

Eagle Eye Book Shop

With 5,000 square feet of new and used books, Eagle Eye Book Shop is easily one of the largest of Atlanta’s independent bookstores. The store has a huge collection of signed titles for sale, and hosts hundreds of literary events each year. This readers’ paradise near Emory University is also dedicated to supporting the city’s independently published authors, and allows writers to apply to use their shop as an event venue and also works with them to sell their books via consignment.

Little Shop of Stories

Decatur’s literary jewel, Little Shop of Stories began in 2005 and has become a cultural center of the city and its annual Decatur Book Festival. As Atlanta’s only independent bookstore devoted specifically to children, the store is home to book clubs for kids and teens, and during the summer the shop hosts weekly camps in its upstairs loft. Locals love the Little Shop of Stories as a unique venue for a children’s birthday party, and the store works with local schools to help parents find everything on required school year and summer reading lists.
